Using The Television In A New Way

Need something fun and different to do with your kids when they are bored? This is something that you can do no matter the age of your child. Even infants would benefit from using the television in this way. It is an immediate and accessible tool that you can use that brings in fun and joy. One of the other great things that I love that it does is incorporates doing something with your body other than sitting.

The only thing that is required is that you have a television service that provides music stations along with its other services. Where I live in the northeast we have Verizon Fios and Cable companies, both provide music stations. There’s also Direct TV, but I am not familiar with what it provides. I would imagine to stay competitive that they would provide a similar service.

I bet you know what I’m going to suggest now. Surf the music channels until you find some music that makes you want to move. When you do everyone has to dance for 10 consecutive¬† minutes non-stop around the house. Every part of your house where you can hear the music must be used. So this means that rooms where you don’t ordinarily dance in you’re dancing in, like the kitchen, the pantry, the laundry room, bathroom and dining room.

This is a lot of fun and is so much more interesting than just dancing in one area or just in place. You will notice that this will also vary your movements and ignite your imagination.¬† Because now you have to figure out how you are going to travel from room to room while still dancing. Don’t worry you’ll be able to do it , or at least have fun trying.

Take this opportunity to really let loose and have a ball. Put your back into it as the saying goes. Don’t worry about what you look like. Just go with how the music makes you feel and just move your body accordingly. It’s really a lot of fun when you act silly and exaggerate the movements.

You might be asking why can’t we just turn on the radio and dance to that. There are two reasons for this, the first is you want to experiment with different music than you ordinarily would listen to. The second reason is because there is a larger variety of music on these stations than the radio. So this would be a great opportunity to expose yourself and children to different types of music, from Classical, Gospel to Country or Rock.

Lastly you want to use this opportunity to be free and creative and to have fun. With infants just move the bodies to the music and carry them to the next room.  Music has such a profound effect on both our bodies and emotions. So use it to give yourself and your children a great time. Play with variations on this theme and do things like pick up your toys to music, or clean to music. When children are studying softly play Baroque Classical music in the background. It is the best music for learning Try it and let me know how it turns out.

  2. I love dancing around the room to music with my kids. Whenever my husband is home and I do this, he grins from ear to ear. It’s good for the body and good for the emotions, too!

Oh yes it is Susan! I think it’s one of the best activities to do as a family. I love your husband’s response to it too. It seems like he’s so happy that his family is happy. Thank you so much for stopping by Susan and thank you also for following me on Networked Blogs. Please comment again. :-) and keep dancing with your kids!
